Theres no explanation and its something I really hoped Remake 2 would fix.

However, Hunk isnt unconscious for a whole week. He was possibily immobised during his initial encounter with Birkin and he probably also spent several days lying low. He also could have ventured back to the lab to try and retrieve another G sample. We know for certain he was active in and around the lab area the same time as Leon and Claire as he recovered the G-sample Leon took off Ada and threw away. He doesnt call for extraction until he has achieved his objective.

Honestly if they would have just combined forgotten soldier into 4th survivor we would have technically had an explanation. Take out Ghost and his little cutscenes, then just make it Hunk in both and boom done.

That way you have him going back to the lab and grabbing the sample while the self destruct warning is going off. Making his way from the lab to the cable car. Rides the cable car to the sewers and then from the sewers makes his way to the front of the RPD.

That would have been great. Then HUNK could have infinite ammo with cat ears.

Yeah there's just something off about being underground for an entire week, ostensibly without water, supplies or backup in the ground zero of a biohazard in a sewer.

My headcanon is that he was could have been gathering equipment from fallen comrades, stealing info from the labs and maybe just laying low, evading Birkin.

There's still a few plot holes, like if he could contact HQ to confirm rendezvous point, he wouldn't need to be stuck for a whole week if his radio/comm was operable. I doubt Birkin spent an entire week chasing him through the sewer (which is a good question, what was Birkin doing that week after being turned?), so perhaps he was simply injured within a mini-coma?

It just doesn't make sense from a storytelling standpoint. Umbrella thinks they lost both teams, all samples, their grip on Birkin and the lab, not to mention the RPD/City, so they say they are ordering a "clean up", right?

I thought the US Government decided with the nuclear option since it was nearing a catastrophic, global E.L.E. type status (doesn't RE3 say Uncle Sam is blowing away Raccon City)?

If that is the case, how did Umbrella manage to intercept that? More relevantly if Umbrella thought Hunk was dead for an entire week, why would they have someone on standby to extract him (remember, it's still very dangerous to fly low over the city Nemmy sniping a helicopter in 3, crash heli in 2 ) so quickly?

Why didn't they {Umbrella} send anyone else if recovering the sample was their biggest concern? They had a week before the containment failure reached pandemic levels. I mean, if they had enough money and power to build an underground, secret railway lab, dispatch multiple B.O.W.s to recoup losses, recover samples and kill survivors, then it means they couldn of shelled out some more money to send in a bonafide anti-BOW hit squad before just waiting.

Hell they had Irons bootlicking them so long {Umbrella}, they could of had a couple paid operatives to escort the chief way before the outbreak happened and just took a sample without any hassle. they could of waited until william and Annette were sleeping or something.

Whew!
...but some things will remain distant dreams forever.

Hunk was underground for an entire week because he couldnt leave until he had completed his objective. Thats the way he works. Umbrella never gave up on him because he has a reputation of surviving no matter what. He only reacquired the sample on Sep 30th and radioed for help not long after.

Another reason Remake 2's writing is poor about a 'clean up' and why it doesnt refer to the bomb is because it isnt even Umbrella who does it. Its the U.S. Government. As soon as the government secured Sherry, Derek Simmons wanted to destroy the city to stop Umbrella getting their own sample of the G-Virus, but Spencer's political influence managed to delay the strike for 24 hours. Once Umbrella confirmed Hunk was clear, they pulled out all their remaining forces from the city, which by this point was only a handful of Monitors.

The entire Raccoon City incident was essentially one big cold war between Umbrella and the US Government. Up until that point they had been in bed together, but when Birkin became disillusioned, the government saw a chance to secure him and bring his work over to them, meaning the government would no longer need Umbrella and could focus on bringing them down instead. Hunk's team were sent in to get to Birkin first. The rest is history and sets up a background plot of the US Government vs Umbrella for the rest of the series with each side trying to blame the other for what happened.

After contact was lost with the special forces team initially sent to extract Birkin, Simmons actually tried to destroy the city much earlier, meaning RE2 and RE3 wouldnt even have taken place. But again Spencer's influence managed to delay this extreme action - buying Umbrella more time to secure the G-Virus for themselves. This was also partly why the UBCS were sent in. Edited video footage was broadcast to the world of UBCS 'heroically' rescuing civilians so the bombing was vetoed.

Birkin was paranoid about everyone. He didnt trust anyone and hardly slept. Irons was also loyal to him because Birkin was paying him off. Irons' job was to look for Umbrella spies trying to steal the virus - so there's no way he was ever going to steal a sample himself.

Even if they met, both Mr. X and Nemesis are Umbrella creatures: nothing would've happened between them. They both have their assigned missions, so they probably would've just walked past each other without even a glance.

Iron in the remake seem to have less explanation. I think his character change from going mad and stuffing people to probably had a dealing with either Umbrella or the government. They probably promise him a way out of the city if he gave them the G-virus or Sherry pendant without knowing it true purpose when she kidnap her and force Claire to bring the pendant to him.

I agreed Spencer made influence so they could extract whatever valueable Umbrella has left. Spencer probably put a hit list to high ranking Umbrella at the same time since he didn't care Umbrella downfall but the secret of the progenitor virus (RE5) which incident Billy (RE0) was falsely charge.

Umbrella used the Nemesis program to kill STARS member who knew about T-virus and the mansion incident which no one believe until the Raccoon City incident. At the same time, they wanted to test Nemesis capability knowing both Mr. X and Nemesis would be perish by the Government nuclear clean-up. I think both Umbrella and Simmon family knew this as they wanted to wipe out all evidence of their activity plus transaction.

For the pilot who extract Hunk, he was curious to meet and believe Hunk would always return alive as the sole survivor.
Cardboard boxes are amazing. You could use it to sneak around. Drop on someone to stun them. Heck if you aren't satisfy with ramming, try a tank through co-op.
