Isn't that basically Earth Gainsborough?

No. Her name is still Aerith.

They try to pronounce it as closely as possible to that within the confines of the Japanese syllabic system.

like Ayyyy-rith?

Not sure if you're deliberately trying to be obtuse because I posted this numerous time already.
This is a really embarrassing topic.

I will always call her Aeris, since that was her name in the PS1 game, it seems weird that they are now calling her Aerith. Aeris sounds much better.

her name is pronounced the way the designer intended, arrogant gamer americans can pronounce it any wat they choose, does mean they are right, I personally go with the originally untranslated version
To the edge of the universe and back, endure and survive

I pronounce it Aeris because I understand how Japanese pronunciation functions.

It's easier for me to get the "eh-ah-ri-su, even with the silent u in the video from de OP that it is to understand the English pronunciation itself.

With my L1 being latin-based, Aerith must sound like "ah-ee" or "ah-e", not the "/ae/".

And, because of that, I cannot ignore that Aeris should sound like Eris (the greek goddess of... well... strife; which is a nice fun fact)

Aerith is canon while "Aeris" isn't.
