I decided to tackle some of the free Steam games this evening after i'd finished with Epic. This session i went more for relaxing games although there are a couple of action ones bookending the selection.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Steel Alcimus
https://store.steampowered.com/app/983990/Steel_Alcimus/
A top-down Desert/Jungle Strike clone. Destroy tanks, rescue hostages, get blown up. Quite tough but fun once you've got the hang of it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Towards the Pantheon: Escaping Eternity
https://store.steampowered.com/app/709450/Towards_The_Pantheon_Escaping_Eternity/
A prequel to a larger adventure game. It's a dark horror and will take you around half an hour. I enjoyed it enough to investigate the full game but i decided against buying it as it looks like a generic JRPG and not the horror game that this taster suggests. Indeed a user review put me off exploring this game further:
"If you happen to come here because of the gritty, dark, question-inducing prequel, the game is a let down."

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Backrooms Game (Free Edition)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1111210/The_Backrooms_Game_FREE_Edition/
A supposed Horror game where you endlessly walk around a maze while the game tries to scare you with sounds and visuals. It fails; it's not unnerving, it's not scary and it's not fun.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Cloud Climber
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1509820/Cloud_Climber/
A 15min walking simulator. There isn't any long-term idea to this one but it was ok for the time it lasted. A few papers to read, a couple of tasks to perform and then it's over.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Plan
https://store.steampowered.com/app/250600/The_Plan/
A 10min window into the life of a fly. Rousing music but not much to see.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Home
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1067900/HOME/
A 10min introspective where the end room is customised by the choices you make along the way. By all means click on everyone/thing if you love everyone/thing but i preferred it being selective with who i waved at.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Meteor 60 Seconds
https://store.steampowered.com/app/788770/Meteor_60_Seconds/
A fun little time-waster. You get 60secs to do stuff through either violence or kissing before the Earth is destroyed. There are 9 endings to unlock, 8 of which can be figured out with the 9th requiring a specific approach. The best game of this set.

Chroma Blast
https://store.steampowered.com/app/653220/Chroma_Blast/
A fiendish twin-stick shooter. It looks a little like Asteroids, but the enemies here have movement patterns and often chase you across the screen. Control ship direction with WASD and shooting direction with the arrow keys. Once you've killed enough enemies you get a choice of 5 powerups which vary in degrees of usefulness. Once i got the hang of the game, it wasn't bad but there are other freebie shooters i'd choose to play before this one again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
One Ping Only
https://store.steampowered.com/app/828030/One_Ping_Only/
A 10min underwater tunnel-drivey thing. There's a bit of text but i can't see how this can be an intro to a bigger story or classed as anything more than a school project.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
September 1999
https://store.steampowered.com/app/952250/SEPTEMBER_1999/
It's a "found footage" walking sim. It's only 5mins long but as a proof of concept it's plenty; this style of game works and could potentially support something much bigger. The visual clues to this horror are pretty hackneyed but otherwise it's a worthwhile experience.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
9.03m
https://store.steampowered.com/app/263100/903m/
An abstract walking simulator with a pretty soundtrack. I can't knock it too hard as it's a tribute to the victims of the 2011 tsunami in Japan. But as a game there's not much to do other than look at some objects and admire the butterfly it releases.

Red Algorithm
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1637910/Red_Algorithm/
See-how-long-you-can-last twin stick shooter. There's a bit of levelling, a few pickups and decent enemy variety. On the flipside the controls are bad (and unchangeable), it takes far too long to reload weapons (without upgradees) and the accuracy is almost non-existent. It's not bad but i gave it half an hour play and i probably won't ever play it again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Sprout
https://store.steampowered.com/app/758530/Sprout/
A 10 minute trial-and-error puzzle game. It has cute hand-drawn artwork, no music and limited gameplay.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Flightless Classic
https://store.steampowered.com/app/731770/Flightless_Classic/
A 15 minute Puzzle game. All but the last level were simple and even that wasn't particularly taxing once you'd taken a moment to think about it. It's got decent music and a nice artstyle but like so many free games you'll enjoy it once and then never touch it again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Iron Snout
https://store.steampowered.com/app/424280/Iron_Snout/
A fun little beat-em-up. Tap out combo's on the arrow keys while avoiding attacks and catching, then throwing weapons. There are a few unlockables as well as some (paid) DLC, but perhaps the most useful thing about this game is it serves as an excellent finger exerciser! You can feel it in your wrists after playing this for an hour, and best of all it supports WASD as well as the arrow keys so you can take both hands to the gym!

Death Rally Classic
https://store.steampowered.com/app/358270/Death_Rally_Classic/
An extremely grindy racing game which will frustrate more than fascinate. The collision engine is awful, the screen moves around in a fashion which makes it hard to drive consistantly and the AI cars get a super tank boost within sight of the finish line which screws you nearly every race. It's terrible, avoid.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Puzzle Plunder
https://store.steampowered.com/app/930310/Puzzle_Plunder/
Puzzle Quest clone. It's ok if you can't afford the actual Puzzle Quest game but this is distinctly clunkier in both upgrades and game boards. Perhaps the biggest fault is that in order to cancel a move, you have click the same square again rather than just click somewhere else as in other games of the type. Unfortunately "Battle for Blood" is also free and that's better than this.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Find You
https://store.steampowered.com/app/672730/Find_You/
A "Lovers Smiles" style game where you have to make two objects meet to complete the level. It might be ok for some but if there's one thing i despise in games it's reversed controls and in this game it's mandatory to utilise them in order to control the "mirrored" character. My brain isn't wired to press left to go right and i quickly lost my patience with this game as a result.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Madu Maths
https://store.steampowered.com/app/689400/Madu_Maths/
Simple adding and subtraction maths questions. Answer quickly for a better rating but it's not challenging for an adult on even the hardest level. Definitely aimed at kids.
