That demo looked so insane when I first saw it,don't get me wrong I love Resident Evil 4 but that demo would have been something else.Shame it didn't become it's own horror game and instead of a hack and slash game

RE 4 is a 'hack and slash' game now?!

Would that even be possible (not counting the final boss)?

Pretty sure they were referring to Devil May Cry.

There's parts where you have to use the handgun: Salazar fight, freeing Ashley, runaway truck, the cleaner drill from Labyrinth, etc... Unsure if you can knife the collapsing ceiling.

Lol we all ran with that...and now I wonder how possible a knife only run (barring the times listed where you need to shoot) would be!

Has anyone played Koudelka?

While I wouldn't classify it as survival horror by any means, I think it did a very good job combining RPG elements, a unique grid-style battle system, creepy atmosphere and monsters. IIRC, the same team later developed the awesome Shadow Hearts games, and even threw in Koudelka (the person) as an NPC in SH2.

What I loved about Koudelka was the ability allocation points; with every level up you would gain stats and you were free to assign them to any attribute for any character instead of being forced to follow a certain level-up chart. One playthrough's mage could be another playthrough's powerhouse, for example.

Another thing was that there were no shops to be found. Because the game technically takes place inside a large mansion over the course of one night, it wouldn't make much sense to throw a random merchant in there. Instead, you need to scavenge for items from monsters and hope you get lucky. Weapons had a durability, and once they're gone then you need to find another replacement, so there was definitely some strategy required about when would be the best time to use what. An RPG without a merchant around is rare and possibly unheard of, but Koudelka pulled it off flawlessly.

There were also ranged weapons such as guns for equipment. Handgun ammo was plentiful and easily found IIRC, but for stronger guns (Shotgun, or magnum?) the ammo for those was much harder to find.

There were a few scenes that took the tension to a new level, though. Even after all these years, I still remember the surprise death scene of the old man and his wife's shotgun suicide. I was in shock for a few minutes after the scene, I'll tell you that much.

Amazing game all around, and a worthy predecessor for the Shadow Hearts games.

I would love to have it remade, or have a new game developed similar to Koudelka's style.

I played Koudelka. I didn't particularly like it. The combat is pretty neat, but I just hated the random battles for a game like it. It made exploration and backtracking a pain. Realising you forgot something, or knowing you had a ways to traverse was dreadful. It needed to be quicker, like Parasite Eve at least.

I recently picked up Predator: Concrete Jungle. Never played it before but have been enjoying it so far & id love another Predator game like that. Maybe make it open world & you could upgrade skills & equipment as you progress.

It's hard getting used to it for sure, but that's why I liked it; it was different from all the other RPGs that I've played. A mix of Resident Evil fixed camera-style exploration with a tactics battle system. There were also multiple formations that you can set in the event of a normal battle, but the formation would be reversed if it was a surprise attack.

IIRC, you could also level up your skills by using them multiple times in battle, and there was also a very unique aspect of assigning stat points - if a character's mental defense is much higher than your healer's Intelligence, then casting a healing spell on them won't restore a lot of HP. You need to make sure you don't go overboard when raising a character's mental defense, or stick to using items instead.

There are a few other gameplay mechanics that I'm sure I haven't mentioned yet, but yes, make no mistake, it does a while for the game to click. It sure as hell took its time with me, but I'm glad it did. Don't regret it one bit.
