Hello, and welcome to the second Retro Awards! I am your host, Zithers, and in this topic we are going to be celebrating the releases of 1955. Rather than having only Quality Cinema Warrior Society members voting, this activity was available to everyone. Of course, only members of the Society would up participating and it was the same eight as 1960! But we'll have more for the next year! I'm sure of it! And now for the show to get on the road. But first a big round of applause to everyone who joined in the fun over the past few months!

Youngest? He was born almost 80 years ago!

Also, man, my ballot was way off on supporting actor. I only had one of those. Happy with the nominees though.

Also, whenever I'm tagged on this site I expect it's someone on the theater board trolling/ranting at me.

Yeah, I only had two of the five (Christiansen and Massey), but I can't argue with any of the choices. I'm happy that Arthur Kennedy got recognition, as he did five movies in 1955; interestingly, we nominated him for a different film than the Oscars did that year: Trial, which I watched and was the movie's okay but he's better in The Man from Laramie.

I think these awards will be interesting because there wasn't a lot of discussion about what people really loved this year, especially performance wise. It's a bit of a mystery box, which is fun. Maybe something crazy will happen like Artists and Models winning Best Picture (although I did have as a winner in one category)

Yeah, I also watched Trial and wasn't too crazy about it. It sort of just turns into an anti-commie movie out of nowhere. I thought the performances were okay from what I remember but nothing really stuck with me.

I also almost voted for Kennedy as well but I went with Crisp from Laramie instead, for whatever reason made sense to me at the time, probably because I liked both of them in the movie.

Conte was the only one on my ballot.

Oh, and I hope to see Artists and Models show up. I'm a big fan and I think a few others on here are too. So I think that's a possibility.

And yeah, It's going to be interesting. Supporting wise for example I had Deisuke Kato from Bloody Spear at Mount Fuji top my ballot which I was thinking that probably a lot of people hadn't gotten around to seeing. Though that's also a tough call because one could argue he's a lead if they don't look at it as an ensemble film the way I was looking at it, and I didn't really ask because I didn't hear anyone else besides Amok mention having watched it. Plus, he won a Blue Ribbon Award for Supporting Actor for it back in the day, so I went with putting him there.

Have some fun tech categories up now!

First is the award for Best Editing which I did not find clips for! The nominees are:

Eiji Ooi, Floating Clouds
Dulal Dutta, Pather Panchali
Roger Dwyre, Rififi
Edith Schlüssel, Ordet

And the winner is...

Dulal Dutta! He edited every single one of Satyajit Ray's films! Only four nominees since there was a three-way tie for fifth...

And now onto the nominees for Best Original Score:

Elmer Bernstein, The Man with the Golden Arm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IfA7mWTrPo

Bernard Herrmann, The Trouble with Harry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4J-J3l5dXg

Walter Schumann, The Night of the Hunter
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEQkhZRYylM

Ravi Shankar, Pather Panchali
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BubTgfnl0jk

And the award goes to...

Ravi Shankar! Herrmann misses out on becoming a two-time winner while Bernstein gets another nod to add to his 1960 one.

Last award of the night is Best Production Design. The nominees are:

Hilyard M. Brown, The Night of the Hunter

Jean d'Eaubonne, Lola Montès
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews49/lola_montes_blu-ray/960_6lola_montes_blu-ray.jpg

Alexander Golitzen & Eric Orbom, All That Heaven Allows

Tambi Larsen & Hal Pereira, Artists and Models
https://d2ycltig8jwwee.cloudfront.net/features/943/fullwidth.3c6186db.jpg

Oliver Smith, Guys & Dolls
https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2822/9527634745_7e0ba1aa64_b.jpg

And the award goes to...

Jean d'Eaubonne! Finding screenshots that show off sets for 1955 movies is hard!

Going to try and crank the rest out tomorrow. But realistically that probably won't happen. So Sunday will get the big ones, I guess.

Shirley MacLaine! Not a bad debut year for her between this movie and The Trouble with Harry! And the yellow bathing suit is an iconic outfit tbh.
