Anyone going to Sundance next year?

I entered this Filmmatic short screenplay competition and all the finalist and winners are supposedly invited to a networking event at Sundance each year. Which I'm assuming is the kind of thing that helps people's writing careers or something? So I should go to this, right?

So I was trying to figure out what the best way to find a place to stay for the weekend or something. I was going to try and see if any of my filmschool friends happen to be going as well though, maybe try and split a room.

Can't help with this, but if you ever make it to the Milwaukee Film Festival with the rest of the heavyweights, I have a guest room.

I mentioned a while back about having an operation that would improve my hearing. Well, long story short it turns out the procedure wouldn’t really help in my situation. Oh well.

It’s not a complete loss though. I’m trying out a new hearing aid that, instead of going into the ear, presses against the back of the skull and vibrates. It feels weird, but it really works. It’s a definite improvement on my current hearing aids. And they can do a different procedure where they stick a magnet to my skull underneath the skin so that I can stick the hearing aid on easily, which is awesome.

All I have to do now is figure out how much my insurance will cover, yada yada. But the point is this is happening. I’ve tried the new hearing aid and the first thing I noticed was how much louder the air conditioning in the room was. lol The doctor said one guy who got this hearing aid drove home, and he thought something was wrong with his car because it was so much louder to him than before. :)

I'm no doctor, but is that a new procedure? And is that majorly invasive surgery or can they just cut a slit and put that magnet there and sew you back up? Are there side effects (migraines is my first concern)? Modern science is amazing, though. I'm glad this situation is going to work out for you, that must be really exciting.

Thanks! And hoo boy those are good questions. Don’t know how new this is. He said they would drill a small hole into my skull. I’ll ask about migraines for sure. Also, I was reading that magnets lose their magnetism from exposure to heat. Sooo...not a scientist, but isn’t it 98.6 degrees in there?

Another problem is I have Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bones), and this doctor doesn’t know if we should be drilling into my skull, so we’re going to talk with my orthopedic surgeon who has operated on me several times before.

WORST case scenario is I don’t get the magnet implant, but there are other options like holding the hearing aid in place with a headband, which is what I tried at my last appointment. It works fine, but looks...kind of...well it’s a headband lol. I feel like the eighties have made enough of a comeback that no one will notice. Seriously though I wear a hat all the time. It’ll be fine. A tiny price to pay for what I’m getting.

I went on a hike with my partner this weekend and took a bunch of pictures. I liked how a lot of them turned out so I feel the need to share a few with you all. (I'm the redhead)

I mentioned it somewhere here before, but everything went well at my best friend's wedding and I killed it with the best man speech. If this website was not stuck in 1999 I would even upload a picture.

Anyway, starting Monday I am taking a big step towards becoming more independent. For press screenings I usually only get there because I have a family member or friend driving. However, life changes for everyone and it's difficult for many of those people to take me to screenings in the afternoon. And I can't just ask people if they want to take off work to go see a movie constantly during the busy season coming up.

So a few weeks ago I applied for pace bus service and I got approved. Monday morning has screenings of The Laundromat and Lucy in the Sky, and I'm going by myself planning on meeting up with a fellow critic to help me getting from point A to point B whilst inside the theater.

Of course, both of these movies happen to be at different theaters in Chicago, so my first time using the service is probably going to be a mess with lots of trial and error. But after doing it once or twice I really think this is going to be a good thing. I'm excited I will be able to get wherever I need to go all by myself
