So since there was interest expressed by several of you, figured I would go ahead and try to make this a thing.

Basically this would be exactly like the QCW Awards except this isn't just for people who vote on that and is open to everyone interested. Same awards, same balloting system, just... we're going back in time!

I'd like to give everyone a few months to watch everything they want to watch. Like I said, I don't want this to just be an exercise for the QCWs, I'd like for it to be open to everyone who is interested. That way we can get more people who post on the board involved in our shenanigans (@Kastrada, @Brett8, @Myke, @De-, @Slanted_Silver, whoever). And not all of us (ahem, me) have seen 100 or 50 or 25 movies from every year and have a ballot ready to go or very few blind spots to catch up on. I'm not trying to be like get rowdy and wanting to poll you guys super frequently. If we can crank out, I dunno, two or three years by the end of 2018 (plus the 2018 awards) I think that would be cool.

Anyway, I don't give a s*** which year we pick. Honestly this whole idea is more or less an excuse for me to have a viewing exercise of some kind since I am uber indecisive about movies (I spend most nights checking what is expiring on FilmStruck and just watch those). So...

BLH recommended '74.
wetwillies seconded '74
thesmark thirded '74 and mentioned '75.

So it seems like 1974 is getting some love but I'd like to see what others have to say. Would obviously like to avoid a year like 1941 or 1968 or 2007 where there's gonna be one or two movies that dominate several categories.

Maybe 1974 isn't such a good option in that case...

You don't think The Godfather 2, Chinatown, A Woman Under..., the two Brooks movies, Parallax View, The Conversation, Freebie and the Bean, Alfredo Garcia, Texas Chainsaw, Lenny, California Split, and, you know, the other movies wouldn't make it a blood bath? Serious question. I haven't seen much from the year and most that I have were viewed ages ago.

I am woefully ill-equipped for the task that's been mentioned to me.

But if I have to throw in a year, I'd say 1994. It's the genesis of independent cinema reaching the populous, it's the year of quality schmaltz. But if you fellas are gettin' sick and tired of anything by Miramax, there's always the underappreciated 1995: the year of "the edge".

1974 has, among others:

-The Godfather Part II
-Chinatown
-Woman Under the Influence
-Blazing Saddles
-Young Frankenstein
-Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
-Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
-California Split
-The Conversation
-F for Fake
-Murder on the Orient Express

I would expect Godfather Part II and Chinatown to battle for Best Picture with Gena Rowland winning Best Actress.

What year would be best for an up in the air vote then? How about 1973? That has:

-Serpico
-Amarcord
-American Graffiti
-Don't Look Now
-The Exorcist
-The Friends of Eddie Coyle
-High Plains Drifter
-The Long Goodbye
-Mean Streets
-The Sting
-Scenes from a Marriage
-The Spirit of the Beehive
-Sleeper
-The Wicker Man

That feels pretty wide open for Best Picture winner while also having a lot of great movies, Along with a wonderfully eclectic mix of genre movies like Coffy, Lady Snowblood and Enter the Dragon. Heck, there's even a surprisingly robust animation category with Belladonna of Sadness, Fantastic Planet, Heavy Traffic and Robin Hood

I think Godather 2 and Chinatown would run away with it no matter how many great movies each of us sees. I’d certainly expect some users to have A Woman Under or Alfredo Garcia or California Split or whatever else on the top of their personal ballots, but on the aggregate I don’t think there’d be any way to avoid having GF2 and Chinatown separate themselves from the pack by a decent margin.

Honestly, part of the reason I love 1974 as a year is because it’s chock full of cool niche personal favorites, and I’d be excited about the idea of forcing other people to care about them. But if we’re talking about likely award outcomes, I’d expect all of my personal niche favorites to collectively win zero QCW awards.

My suggestion for this would to be ease backwards. Maybe like the year 2000, then the year 1990, then 1980, 1970 and 1960 and so forth. And then swing back to 2001 amd so forth or something. But whatever you folk feel like is fine by me.
