Most arcade Nintendo games released under the "Vs." title (implying they were on the VS. System engine) were notably often the same as their NES and Famicom varieties. Vs. Super Mario Bros. is an exception in this as it featured levels both from the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES as well as the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 from the Famicom Disk System: the levels in the latter had not been seen by most American audiences since the Japanese SMB2 went unreleased in the U.S. until the release of Super Mario All-Stars.
