Gathering-related skills

Each race has a unique gathering skill. Make sure to have a single point in these skills on at least every member of a different race in your party:

  • Chop
  • Mine
  • Take
  • Gathering Skill

Having 2 party members of the same race with a point in their Gathering-related skill will give a chance to increase number of items gathered. Putting a point in these Gathering-related skills greatly increases the chances of yielding rare materials.

Trust me, it may seem like a big deal, but you typically won't miss the points and it'll reduce a lot of hassle with having to farm materials all the time.

Event-related skills

There will be Events, often referred to as Adventurer's Log, that will have the player interact with NPCs, gather food, or have the party negotiate a particular challenge. These events generally require the current party members to have the proper passive racial skills to trigger the events and/or to acquire additional EXP, awards, or to avoid penalties (generally in the form or HP or TP loss) from the events.

The Event-related Racial Skills are

  • Fishing
  • Forage Skill
  • Animal Care
  • Detect Mana
  • Night Vision
  • Hunting Skill
  • Reflexes
  • Brute Strength

Only a single current party member is required to have a single point in one of the aforementioned skills to get the best result from these events. Some adventure skills are unique to a particular race.

These events are not necessary to complete the game, although lacking them may cause the player to miss certain foods, quests, items and Codex entries which may bother those aiming for a 100% playthrough.

Fishing, Animal Care, Hunting Skill and Forage Skill are primarily related to food and without them you’re very likely to miss out on quests related to food.

Union skills

Union Skills are one of the game's unique features, in which your party members can cooperate and perform combination moves that require several characters. Some Union Skills are unlocked by default, but most skills have to be learned with Skill Points. The person who activates the Union Skill must have 100% Union Skill Gauge, shown at the right side of the screen. However, the helpers don't need to have 100% Union Skill Gauge to aid the main character. Once the Union skills are performed, every character who activates the skill will have theirs Union Skill Gauge drops to 0%. Every command will recharge the gauge again until the gauge reaches 100% and is ready to be used.

The recommended Union skills for each race are:

  • Earthlain: Tri-Shield and Black Mist are must haves. Resuscitate and Blessing are okay if you lack strong healing in your party composition.
  • Therian: No must haves; all Union skills are optional to what would be useful to your party.
  • Celestrian: Chain Blast. Period. A solid chance of fully binding the enemies, locking them down completely.
  • Brouni: Aegis Shield and Hygieia’s Bowl are must haves. Guard Order is highly recommended. Note that Brouni’s have the best defensive Union Skills in the game, so it is a great idea to use a Brouni in a defensive or supportive role for your party - That is where their stats are best suited.
Other skills

Passive skills such as Cardio, Bodybuilding, Talent, etc should be taken if they benefit your classes’ skills. STR for most physical skills, INT for most elemental skills, AGI for speed, accuracy, and evasion, and LUC for critical, evasion, and binds / ailments infliction rate/resistance. The passive stat bonus(es) start at 3 and scale to a maximum 10 by the time your character reaches level 99.

Other passive racial skills such as Haggle, Gourmet, Sorting, etc should be taken if you consider their utility to be worthy of a skill point, even if some of these skills do not offer a stat bonus they can be well worth it.

SPOILER: Consideration toward Master Titles (2nd Names)

Don’t be too worried about which Master Titles (2nd Names) you plan unlock in the future regarding your skill builds, get the best skills for what you're doing now (or skills you want to test). When Master Titles are unlocked just rest your characters (you lose 2 levels) so that you can fully reallocate your points into the updated skill tree. Be aware that you should think ahead when choosing the race of a character. Knowing which Master Titles you intend to use and choosing the proper race in the early stages will greatly benefit the character’s effectiveness in the future
