Festivals and Birthdays

Starting in Fall of your first year, you will have the option to attend various festivals held in the valley each month. There is no calendar in your house to help you keep track of these upcoming events, but seven to ten days prior to a festival or birthday you will be reminded of this in your dreams. On the morning of a festival, Rowan or another NPC will barge into your home to explain the festival and how to participate. You will need to speak to the organizer (Sam, Hanna, Iris, or Naomi) in front of your house between 6 AM and 10 AM to participate in contest festivals, meaning you must go to bed before 3:59 AM the night before if you want to enter. If you do not participate in a contest, the event will be canceled and the day will continue as an ordinary, non-contest day.

Should you decide to enter the contest that day, you will be prompted to select the difficulty class you wish to enter. Each contest has three separate divisions, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced, with higher ranks unlocking as you win the previous ones. Time will then advance to ~10:30 AM when the organizer will explain the rules of the contest. If you change your mind about participating during the match or only wanted to spectate, you can speak to the organizers at any time to forfeit. All contests conclude at 4 PM and wrap up at 5 PM after the prize ceremony. After the results are announced, your family or the marriage candidate with the highest chemistry will either congratulate or console you depending the outcome. The weather is not guaranteed to be sunny on festival days as it is in past Harvest Moon titles, but the events will still take place even if the weather is foggy or stormy.

During the sleeping sickness event, your spouse will discourage you from participating in festivals, but contest festivals can still be entered normally if you wish. He or she will not participate in romantic festivals however, so you will not be able to go out for a Starry Night date that year.
