From Fall Year 1 onward, Sam will start organizing this contest on the tenth day of every season. The goal is to catch fish worth the most amount of points before 4 PM when the contest ends. If your bobber is still in the water when 4 PM rolls around, time will stop until you finally reel it in. The size of the fish you catch will determine how many points they are worth, so a 54.6 cm Crucian Carp for example will be worth 546 points. Because of this, you will want to fish in a pond or river big enough to spawn large fish shadows. If the pond is too big however, fish will have much more room to wander off and ignore your line. The pond in the photo below is spacious enough to spawn large fish shadows but small enough that they can't swim far from the bobber, making it ideal for catching fish quickly. Bait can be used if you like, but it is time-consuming to produce and will force you to reel in every time it's consumed. All three divisions can be easily won without it, so you may prefer to sell any bait you have to Sam for 500 G each. Winning is often a matter of luck, so saving before or during the festival to try again if you lose is recommended.

Spring

Fish at the pond next to the Goddess Spring and try to catch Rainbow Trout and Crucian Carp, or fish at water level to catch Yellow Perch and Crucian Carp. If using the pond by the Goddess Spring, you may want to terraform it a bit prior to the contest to make it more ideal for fishing. It is difficult to win the Advanced division in this season, so you may want to wait until Summer or Fall when you can catch giant fish.

Summer

Fish at water level and try for Arowana, or fish at very low elevations and try to catch both Alligator Gar and Arowana. Alligator Gars are very tough to reel in, so you may want to place your 3DS on a flat surface to help you tap the button quickly enough. Another trick is to place the 3DS on a flat surface and use the stylus or a pen to "scribble" back and forth on the A Button to reel it in.

Fall

Fish at the pond next to the Goddess Spring and try to catch Bullhead or Rainbow Trout. You may want to terraform the pond a bit prior to the contest to make it more ideal for fishing.

Winter

Fish at any elevation and try to catch Crucian Carp or Yellow Perch. It is difficult to win the Advanced division in this season, so you may want to wait until Summer or Fall when you can catch giant fish.
