Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Badge Guide by Viro

Version 1, Last Updated 2014-01-07

What are badges?

Badges are reusable items that give you helpful effects in battle. There are 12 badges total. Each bro will have one badge equipped. The effect you get from badges is determined by which combination of badges the bros have. Each bro has 6 badges available to them, which means there are 36 possible combinations.

Finding badges

Some badges are acquired for free as you progress through the game. Most badges are found in badge shops. There are 3 badge shops in the game: One in Pi'illo Castle, one in Dozing Sands, and one in Wakeport. All 3 will have the same badges for sale at any time.

Found in Pi'illo Castle:

Equipping badges

In the badges section of the menu, you can choose which badges you want to use. All badges you own will show up on two wheels. Near the center of the screen, those two wheels intersect to show you which two badges you currently have selected. Pressing L will rotate the left wheel, and pressing R will rotate the right wheel. The top of the screen shows your badge meter with the two badges you have equipped and the effect of the two badges you currently have selected. If you want to equip the badges you have selected, press A. If your badge meter isn't empty, a confirmation screen will show up, asking if you want to reset your badge meter and equip your selected badges. Press A again to confirm. At any time, you can press B to leave the menu or the confirmation screen without switching badges.

This screen can also be accessed in battle during your turn by touching the badges icon in the lower left corner. Switching badges won't take up a turn.

Using badges

During battle, all the information you need to know about badges will show up on the touch screen.

Badge Meter

This will show up on the top of the touch screen as a bar with two badges on it. Luigi's badge is on the left side of the bar while Mario's badge is on the right. Below that bar is a description of what your current badges will do. Each time one of the bros attacks, that attack's attack rating will break itself up into star power (SP), and that SP will fill that bro's side of the badge meter. Once the bar is 90% full, the bar will begin pulsing. That doesn't do anything; it just means you're close to full. Once the bar is completely full, the combo's effect is added to your Badge Stock and your badge meter resets itself.

Four factors determine how much SP each attack gives. First, there's what rank the attacking bro is.

Rankr=
Mushroom0
Shell1
Flower2
Star3
Rainbow4

Second, there's which attack is used. Third, there's what attack rating that attack gets. Fourth, there's whether or not the attack is dreamy.

There are three ways to drain your badge meter:

  1. Completely filling your badge meter will send the badge's effect to your badge stock then drain the meter. If you fill your meter more than you need to, any excess will be added to your meter after it drains again, so you won't always have to restart from empty.
  2. Any time a bro is KO'd, their side of the meter drains completely. Don't let that happen!
  3. When you switch badges, the entire meter resets itself.

Equipment

Charge Gloves will add 1 to r when calculating SP. Charge Gloves DX will add 2 to r. Charge Wear will give you 10SP every time you take damage. Energy Wear gives you 15SP every time you take damage. They won't work if your HP falls to 0, so you can't sacrifice a brother to fill your badge meter. No other equipment will help you charge your badge meter.

Badge Stock

Your badge stock is in the middle of the screen. At first, it will just be two empty circles. Once you've filled the Badge Meter, a badge combo will be added to your leftmost empty badge stock slot. At the beginning of your turn, before you choose an action, you can use any combo you have in your badge stock. Touching a combo once will show you that combo's effect. Touching it again will use that effect and remove it from your badge stock. Using a badge effect won't take up a turn.

At first, your badge stock will only be able to hold 2 effects. You can improve that with the Badge Stock +1 rank up bonus after any rank up, once per bro, to bring your badge stock size up to 4.

If you fill your badge meter while you have no empty badge stock slots, your leftmost effect will be lost, everything will slide over to the left, and the new effect will be added on the right.

If you were tripped at the beginning of the battle, you will not be tripped after using Miracle/Silver. Miracle/Silver will not be returned if you use it. Miracle/Master used as Miracle/Silver will not be returned. If you started with Miracle/Silver, filled the meter, then used the combo, the badge meter drains itself.
The following are not reverted:
  • Enemy HP
  • Enemy status effects
  • Item effects on enemies
  • Turn order
  • Battle Ring turn count
  • Expert Challenge status

Miracle/Gold

Description: Stops time for a moment so that all enemies will be unable to move.
SP required: 450

(Exception: A Monolift or Monolift R lifting 4 rocks will still be KO'd immediately if you jump on them.) Background enemies are affected. Damage done will not count as boot or hammer damage regardless of how the damage was done. This can exceed 9999 damage.

Secret Box

When you use a Secret Box, it will copy the effect of a random badge combination. This won't affect your badge meter or badge stock (unless the badge combination itself does that), but it will take up a turn.

Badge Campaign

The badge campaign is just a promotional stunt for Wakeport's badge shop. The first time you enter that shop, you'll get a free badge lesson. That's all it is.
