Love Hero Review - New Wave Weird

For just $1 you get something a little weird but in a good way. The developer Butterfly manages to make an artistically modern retro bite-sized goodie with themes that require some imagination similar to video games from the late 70s and early 80s. Here is my review on Love Hero.

Love Hero is very simple to play as you only have the control stick to move the ship and any of the 4 right thumb buttons to shoot bullets. Essentially you play as a ship that shoots from the front and back and your goal in every level is to survive against obstacles until time runs out. Some strategy is involved in movement but not much. Along with smooth controls Love Hero is fun and gets very difficult as you progress through each level. Death was fair and kept me on my toes when time dwindled down. Once a level is complete you unlock the song and a mysterious piece of artwork that relates to the level. The story is pretty much up in the air! The description on the eShop was very indistinct but hopefully someone can interpret the dark meaning behind all this anonymity. The game gives clues into what is happening to the character but that is it. If you can piece it together go for it!

The graphics are extremely simple and not as complex as the NES but they do take you back during an age where video games had this look so imagination is an important factor in what you're seeing which I can appreciate. As for the sound it keeps itself simple but the music is amazing! The synth and dark electronic voices feel very relaxing. You can beat the game in about less than an hour. I usually don't replay games but Love Hero is one of those games where the soundtrack is so good that I had to open again! I literally leave my 3DS on and hook up my earbuds just to listen to the music!

With the game only being $1 it was worth it! If the game was anything more than $5 the rating would have been lower. Plus with the 3DS on its last legs Love Hero might be a hidden gem on the 3DS eShop so hopefully this review will shed some light on it. Love Hero is definitely one of the coolest, affordable, and weirdest games I've played in a while.
