The Nintendo system in the players bedroom at the beginning of the game is a easter egg that has been around since the first Pokemon games. In the past it has been the most recent Console put out by Nintendo. In this game though, it is the Nintendo Switch.

The Mantine Surf mini-game lets you travel between islands. However, surfing between the real Hawaiian Islands is impossible; you need to take a flight to cover the long distances.

Connection to Other Media

The Partner Cap Pikachu was distributed as a promotion for the 20th Pokemon movie, called I Choose You!. As its cap implies, this Pikachu is Ash's main Pokemon from the anime.

Just before you reach the Battle Tree, you'll encounter older versions of Red and Blue (AKA Ash and Gary) from original Pokemon Red/Blue games. As usual, Blue does all the talking, while Red speaks only in ellipses. In the Battle Tree challenge itself, they'll appear as Battle Legends. There are also Special Trainers, such as Anabel, Colress, Cynthia, who all come from previous Pokemon games.

Team Rainbow Rocket is made up of the main villains of from all the previous Pokemon games: Maxie, Archie, Cyrus, Ghetsis, Lysandre, all led by Giovanni. However, each comes from a different dimension, where they managed to beat the heroes.

You'll often come across NPCs who talk about the Kanto region. While these are referencing Pokemon Red/Blue, they're also paying homage to the Japanese influence on Hawaii's culture and history.
